Are you racing PHRF
Time
on Distance ( ToD) where:
1) The handicap
spreads are greater then 30 secs/mile ? 2) The courses are
unusual .... shapes ? 3)
There are strong currents ? * 4)
The winds are often light ?
Time on Time ( ToT ) scoring may level the playing field a
little under these conditions. There
is no "perfect" system, but ToT appears to be a step in the right
direction.
PHRF ToD was designed to be used with handicap spreads of 20
seconds/mile or
LESS.
Above that, the system falls apart with a bias towards the
"faster"
boats. Yet many yacht
clubs continue to use PHRF ToD with PHRF spreads way above the 20
seconds/mile! In my opinion:
PHRF Northwest has taken many positive steps to correct the bias the
faster
( lower PHRF ) boats enjoy, resulting in fairer racing and closer
finishes.
Current: Racing
in current has a major effect on PHRF ToD, which ToT will partially
compensate for.
I wrote a program which shows
the effect of
current on boats with different PHRF
numbers. This is a DOS program (.exe) written in Microsoft Quick
Basic.
The program source and executable code is available upon request. Simulated Races

Interesting system for headsail adjustments for PHRF non-spinnaker
fleets. NOT intended for mixing
spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats in the same fleet.
Intended as an improved headsail adjustment, as the headsail size
effects both the
upwind and downwind boat performance for non-spinnaker equipped
boats. Eastern Conn. non-spinnaker adjustment
system.
