Bar Code Systems & Supplies
Keyboard Wedge:
These devices are for interfacing PC's to bar
code
scanners. Installed between the keyboard and the PC, they take data
from
a scanner and input through the keyboard port. No software changes are
required on the PC! USB interfaces are now available.
RS232
Wedge:
These devices are for interfacing terminals and
PC's
to bar code scanners. Connected through a RS232 port (COM) For use with
a PC, a TSR or custom program is required. Pricing slightly higher then
a keyboard wedge.
Portable
Data Collectors:
PDC's are electronic notepads with the ability to
have a bar code scanner attached. They require a data collection
program
which are often written with the help of a "program generator." They
have
a small keypad but scanner input is preferred. Collected data is
downloaded
to the PC via a RS232, USB, optical or RF link.
INPUT
DEVICES FOR WEDGES & PDC's
Wands:
The wand device is the least expensive of all
devices
to be connected to keyboard wedge or PDC. Reliable operaton depends on
the user, as the motion has to be relatively smooth and cross the whole
label. Also since it requires contact with the label they tend to wear
faster.
CCD
Scanners:
Charged coupled devices. These readers can
operate
from about 0"-1" from the label, and can only read as wide as the the
scanner
width. (2" to 4") Excellent choice for P.O.S. systems. Their scan rate
is around 50 scans/sec. Their cost, varies with size. With prices in
the
$150-$300 range.
Laser
Scanners:
These scanners have the greatest depth of field,
from less then 2" to over 2 '. Long range versions with ranges to 6'
are
available. Their scan rate is around 500 scans/second.
Bar
Code Slot Readers:
These are designed for scanning bar codes on
identification
cards.
Magnetic
Slot readers:

card
